Upcoming Tremont St. 20s&30s Events

Unless otherwise noted, all events take place at Temple Beth Shalom of Cambridge.

Regular TBS Friday Night Minyan: Kabbalat Shabbat

6:30 pm year round

As many of you know, the regular Friday night Egalitarian minyan at Tremont St. is growing and thriving. We regularly meet upstairs in the main sanctuary, 6:30pm year round, and make a small kiddush/Oneg Shabbat together after the service. It's a beautiful service, and everyone is welcome.

We would like to get more people involved in leading the services from week to week. Contact Erica to volunteer -- or if you need a practice tape to learn or refresh. We also have some recordings of the Friday night prayers online.

20s&30s Ice Cream Outing

Monday Jul. 6
8:30 - 9:30 pm
I scream, you scream, we all scream (metaphorically, of course...) for ICE CREAM! Join the Tremont St. 20s&30s to fill your ice cream cravings with a (buy-your-own, kosher) trip to J.P. Licks in Davis Square, Somerville, directly across from the Somerville Theatre.

Come early to beat the line! We'll hang out in the square outside the shop to eat and schmooze. RAIN DATE TBD.

No RSVP necessary, but you can email 20s30sinfo @ tremontstreetshul dot org with any questions.

20s&30s DeCordova Museum Picnic Outing

Sunday Jul. 19
12:45 - 5:30 pm
We'll carpool from TBS to the sculpture garden at the DeCordova Museum in beautiful Lincoln, MA. The DeCordova Sculpture Park, encompassing 35 acres of rolling woodlands and lawns, is the largest park of its kind in New England.

RAIN OR SHINE, meet in the TBS courtyard at 12:45pm for carpooling; we'll depart at 1pm sharp. (Those coming from points west may meet us at the museum at 1:30 instead.) Admission to the DeCordova campus is $12 per adult. Bring a sack lunch, sunscreen (and/or umbrella!), and whatever other picnic equipment you desire. We should be back in Cambridge by around 5:30pm.

RSVP at our handy online signup form by 5pm on Friday 7/17. Please indicate with your RSVP whether you are a driver or a passenger for the carpool (or will meet us in Lincoln).
20s&30s: Tisha B'Av Pre-Fast Dinner & Study

Wednesday Jul. 29
6:30 - 8:00 pm
The fast of Tisha B'Av, the ninth day of the month of Av, is the anniversary of the destruction of both the First and Second Temples, as well as many other disasters in the history of the Jewish people.

  We'll have a light pre-fast meal at 6:30pm, followed by a 7pm study session on Tisha B'Av.

Cost for dinner = $10. Admission is payable at the door, but PRE-REGISTRATION IS ABSOLUTELY REQUIRED if you wish to eat with us! (signup info to come) Those who would rather forego the communal meal are encouraged to join us at 7pm for the learning only, no charge.

At 8:15pm, we'll adjourn to join the TBS community for a moving prayer service that includes a candlelight reading of the Book of Eicha, or Lamentations.

The complete Tisha B'av schedule can be found at http://www.tremontstreetshul.org/shulwiki?n=Main.TishaBav2009 .

Tu B'Av Singles Mixer, Session A (35+)

Sunday Aug. 2
5:30 - 7:00 pm
Our singles mixers are now semi-annual by popular demand, but Tu B'Av is the original. Tu B'Av, the fifteenth (or full moon) of the month of Av, is traditionally considered a matchmaking occasion and/or an auspicious time for meeting one's beloved. Help us make this tradition a reality! We'll provide kosher wine and cheese, other snacks and beverages, some informal icebreaking activities, and a relaxed environment for mingling.

Doors at 5:15pm to get registered for Session A. Cost: $10 ($7 full-time students) with your online registration by 11:59pm on Saturday, August 1, 2009. At-door: $15 ($12 full-time students). FREE to dues-paid TBS members! Ages 35-41 are encouraged to stick around for Session B (7:30-9:30 pm) at no additional charge.

You MUST complete the online registration form in order to qualify for the advance-RSVP rate. (Emailing your RSVP does not count for this event.) To speed it up even more, prepay your admission via PayPal (you'll get the link upon succesful completion of registration; prepayment is nonrefundable, but may be transferred). It all starts here:

  FAQ:
  * "How many people are coming? What's the gender balance?" Last time we had over 100 participants and a pretty even gender split. Of course, the more people we get, the better it will be for everyone. Please forward this to any and all of your single Jewish friends -- you never know what could happen!
  * "What's the age range? I'm in my 40s (or more), can I come?" Last year we instituted a new format: dual sessions! Session A (ages 35+) will be 5:30-7pm. At 7pm, we will clear and reset the room for Session B (ages 21-41), 7:30-9:30pm. Ages 35-41 are encouraged to stick around and attend both sessions at no additional charge.
  * "What's the dress code?" Those familiar with our community know that Tremont St. is a pretty casual environment. (However, as Mom would say, it never hurts to look your best!) White clothing is traditional for Tu B'Av, and we encourage this.
  * "How does it work?" On arrival, each person gets an ID number on their nametag, and a request card. As you mingle throughout the evening, anyone you'd like to get to know better, write down their ID # and their first name. When the evening is over, we'll tabulate the results, and if anyone you requested also requests you, you have a match! We'll send you the contact info of all your matches, and send yours to them. The rest is up to you.
  * "Do I have to be Jewish to attend?" While we don't check anyone's certification at the door, we do request that all participants be Jewish-identified.
  * "Yeah, but this is only for straight folks, right?" This is, of course, Tremont Street! Unlike most dating events, we do not segregate based on gender. You can write down anyone who interests you. If (and ONLY if) that person writes you down too, we'll connect you.
  * “Does this really work?” So far, we have at least one confirmed successful long-term match from each mixer, with two marriages to date. For a crowd of ~100 people, we think that’s pretty good. And that’s only the ones we know about! This year, it could be you — but only if you attend!
